air potato plant control with beetles

Lily-Beetles helping to stop creeping air-potato vines

Florida homeowners have a difficult time with a creeping vine which has heart-shaped leaves and potato like bulbs that suffocate trees and other native plants. Without intervention potato vines can take over entire forests in just a few months.

Take a look at this image with multiple lily beetles. They may look like ladybugs but they are larger and they sure love potato plants.

What’s more, they are so effective that the state of Florida is giving them away to residents who want to use them on their property.

Native to Asia, the beetles have been deployed over 300,000 bugs in 42 counties. Luckily, they only eat air potato plants. Science!

Mosquitos transmit Zika Virus

Taking a Bite ouf of The Zika Virus

mosquito-ppe The Zika Virus is a virus that is carried by mosquitoes. So far, there are 70 reported cases of Zika in Florida alone. According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, the virus is mostly spread by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. That particular type of mosquito bites aggressively during the day and at night. The virus can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse as well as blood transfusion. It is also passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus which can cause a birth defect called Microcephaly.

mosquito-pelletsThere is no immunization for this virus, so people must take precautions to protect themselves. Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants. The public has also been encouraged to us EPA approved insect repellents that contain Deet, Picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Even though these preventative measures are effective, one must also treat the areas where mosquitoes live and breed.

Since mosquitoes breed in standing water, any water source in or around your home or business should be monitored and/or treated. DGC Environmental is trained to treat Mosquito areas in order to interrupt the life cycle of the Mosquitoes. Shallow water with vegetation around the edge of a retention pond is the most attractive to mosquitoes so DGC will work to remove exotic vegetation in those areas and also treat with EPA approved pesticide. At least two treatments (2 weeks apart) are needed to rid your property of mosquitoes.

Some things you can do to remove standing water around your home and business.

Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out containers that hold water.
